Overview

Imagine you grew up in a strict Baptist home where cooking on Sundays was forbidden and where a woman was considered to have no future other than to be a man's helpmeet.

What if you refused to accept your God-given place and ran away with a heroin addict?

Imagine just as you found your own true love, you were told everything you had ever dreamt of could be snatched away.

Comment

I'm not entirely sure what to say about this book. It made me laugh, it nearly made me cry, it made me shudder to think what it was like growing up in such an unhappy home, and it made me smile to see Robbi experimenting with her faith.

I was never a fan of autobiographies, until I read Foreign Correspondent, and I realised that reading about regular peoples lives, and the struggles and triumphs they face, is far more interesting than I thought. Robbi had a tough childhood and a tough marriage, but she gained good friends and good kids, and found that she could create her own happiness.

Her illness was mentioned at the beginning of the book, so it was no surprise, but her courage and determination was. I hope that this a book that stays with me for a long time.
