Overview

Although officially retired, ex-Special Agent Pender can't ignore a plea for help from an old friend - especially when there's an all-expenses-paid vacation in the Caribbean attached.

Three corpses have been found on the island of St Luke - with one thing in common: the victims' right hands have been severed at the wrist. Desperate not to damage the island's flourishing tourist industry, St Luke's chief of police needs Pender's help to catch the killer they call the 'Machete Man' before he strikes again.

In the course of his long police career, Pender has encountered some dangerously warped and vicious criminals - but the truth behind the identity of the 'Machete Man' is stranger and more horrifying than anything he's come across before...

Comment

Retired cop asked to help catch a deranged serial killer - I was expecting a fairly predictable book, and I got it.

Pender is very much infallible, complete with an obesity problem and a preference for Jim Beam. He falls for a woman with a secret, and guesses exactly what is going on fairly early on.

Lewis is the unbalanced sap who gets in way over his head, while the Epps and their companion Bennie seem to ooze an evil vibe that everyone who comes into contact with them seem completely oblivious to.

This was a light read, and despite several spelling mistakes, was enjoyable enough without demanding too much thinking.
